BY ANY MEANS Review + DREAMS IN NIGHTMARES and COYOTE VS. ACME | SEATED Podcast | Ep. 46

WATCH ON YOUTUBE Hosts Tre'vell Anderson and Ray Love Jr. are grabbing their badges and heading down south to 1960s Mississippi for their review of Elegance Bratton's highly debated historical crime thriller, BY ANY MEANS. Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as a young Black FBI agent forced to team up with Mark Wahlberg's ruthless mafia hitman, the film tracks their deadly hunt for the Ku Klux Klan following the murder of civil rights leader Vernon Dahmer Sr. Ray and Tre'vell get into the nitty-gritty of the film's execution, unpacking the heavy controversy surrounding the real-life Dahmer family, how this violent true-crime story plays through the Black gaze, and whether the movie actually gives what it's supposed to give or just falls into the exhausted white savior trap. Tune in for their hella honest verdict: is this gritty period piece a "Seated," "Stream It," or a "Skip It?" For the "Fresh Out" segment, Ray shares his capsule reviews of the indie feature DREAMS IN NIGHTMARES and the long-awaited animated hybrid COYOTE VS. ACME. Plus, the hosts play a special "Canon Cousin" edition of the Black Cinema Games, highlighting five films that act as canonical cousins to By Any Means—specifically zeroing in on movies that heavily feature or sparked major cultural debates around the classic Hollywood white savior trope. Finally, they close the show with Good Vibes Only, sharing what's bringing them joy this week—including a long-awaited 20-year physical release from an undisputed music icon and a hilarious, mouth-twisting party game.
