Magnus Vinding co-founded the Center for Reducing Suffering where he is also a researcher. He is the author of books including Compassionate Purpose, Reasoned Politics and Suffering-Focused Ethics. In this Sentientism conversation, he explores how we can live purposeful lives that help make the world better, but that are also good for us as individuals. We're sentient beings too, of course, so we need to be compassionate to ourselves.We cover his journey from a Protestant upbringing in Denmark to adopting naturalism, why he defends a moral realist view centred on experience, and why good intentions and compassion alone aren't enough without evidence and reason. We discuss the case for suffering-focused ethics and answer common objections about extinction, death and freedom.
