You finished Invisalign or braces and somebody told you to wear a retainer forever. You probably thought, seriously, forever? Here is the problem. You can skip your retainer for weeks and think everything is fine, until one day it is not, and the work you paid for starts slipping away.
In this video, I'm going to explain what really happens when people stop wearing their retainers, how to tell if your teeth have already shifted, and exactly what to do tonight if yours has been sitting in a drawer.

âť“ QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Do you have to wear a retainer forever?
Most people need some form of long term retention, but it often becomes as simple as wearing it only at night once your dentist or orthodontist approves a lighter schedule. Stopping completely gives your teeth the chance to shift again.
What happens if you stop wearing your retainer?
Teeth often move slowly and quietly at first, so nothing looks different right away. By the time you notice crowding, a gap opening, or a retainer that no longer fits, some movement has already happened.
If my retainer feels tight again, do I need braces or Invisalign again?
Not automatically. Small amounts of movement often just need a new retainer or a minor adjustment, while larger shifts may need clear aligners or another short round of treatment.
