Side Quest: Play-Doh Was Originally Wallpaper Cleaner

Play-Doh was never supposed to be a toy. The soft compound originally came from a business selling wallpaper cleaner designed to remove coal soot from walls. But as cleaner heating systems and washable wallpaper became common, the product was losing its reason to exist. Then nursery-school teacher Kay Zufall realized children could use the material for modeling. In this Side Quest, we explore how a fading household cleaner was completely reimagined, how Play-Doh moved from dirty walls to classroom tables, and why sometimes a failed product does not need to be fixed—it needs a completely different purpose.
