The Axe Murders of Villisca, Iowa

On June 9, 1912, an unknown killer entered a quiet home in Villisca, Iowa, slaughtering Josiah and Sarah Moore, their four children, and two visiting neighborhood girls with an axe. The bizarre crime scene baffled detectives: every mirror had been shrouded with cloth, sheets covered the victims' faces, and the murderer calmly ate a meal in the kitchen before vanishing into the night. More than a century later—following botched investigations, the sensational trial of an eccentric preacher, and reports of lingering spirits—the massacre remains one of America’s most chilling unsolved mysteries. In this episode of Southern Ghost Stories, Allen Sircy examines the brutal Villisca axe murders, the bizarre clues left in the bedrooms, and the terrifying modern lore surrounding the bloodstained home.
