Description
She Was Asleep When He Took the Photo: The Cynthia Schultz Case
Danger can hide in small, precise details: a size eleven steel-toed Carhartt boot placed upright in a Kansas ditch, a folded white crew sock inside, and a Polaroid dated nine days earlier showing a trucker asleep 460 miles away - why was that photo left there? What connects a sleeping woman in Rawlins, Wyoming to a boot on the Ridgeback Hollow Nature Path in Morrow County, Kansas?
In this episode, we tell the sequence of events from the moment the photograph was taken to when it was found, recounting the stops Cynthia Schultz made on her route, the sightings of a man in a dark canvas jacket, and the investigative reconstruction that followed - how did the image travel nine days and 460 miles, and whose boot was it?
Person: Cynthia Schultz
Date: August 7, 2019
Location: Rawlins, Wyoming (photo taken); Ridgeback Hollow Nature Path, Morrow County, Kansas (boot found)
Distance: 460 miles
Investigation: 14-month reconstruction by journalist Robert Campbell
- A three-year-old Vizsla named Pepper found a size eleven steel-toed Carhartt work boot upright in a drainage ditch on August 16, 2019.
- The boot contained a folded white crew sock and a Polaroid photograph dated August 7, 2019 showing a woman sleeping in a truck cab.
- Cynthia Schultz, age 52, had been a long-haul driver for Falconer Logistics for 19 years and was on a roughly nine-day loop when the photo was taken.
- Cynthia encountered a man in a dark canvas jacket at three separate stops: Colby, Kansas (July 29), Green River, Utah (August 3), and the Flying Steer diner near Rawlins, Wyoming (August 6).
- The boot was sitting on top of crusted clay that indicated it had been placed after heavy rain in the Kettner River basin on August 14, 2019.
