Ep. 115: From Survival Mode to Building a Legacy | Monte Duncan
Monte Duncan returns to the Street Tales Podcast — and this time, the conversation isn't simply about what happened to him. It's about what those experiences taught him and how they shaped the man, father, and entrepreneur he's working to become. Joined by BJ, Tyler reconnects with one of his closest friends and former Tennessee State University teammates for an honest, funny, and at times deeply personal conversation about survival, choices, fatherhood, money, policing, education, friendship, and breaking generational cycles. Monte takes us back to growing up in Atlanta's Bluff, where survival wasn't an abstract concept, it was everyday life. Sports gave him an outlet, but the neighborhood taught lessons of its own. Monte reflects on learning to defend himself at an early age, developing a reputation, navigating the streets, and eventually recognizing the difference between doing what was necessary to survive and making choices that could change the direction of his life. The episode doesn't avoid Monte's mistakes either. After college and the end of his football aspirations, Monte found himself trying to provide for his children and eventually returned to the streets to make money. Looking back, he talks openly about the decisions he made, the risks he took, and the difference between having money and actually knowing what to do with it. Today, Monte is focused on something different: building. He's working toward owning his own business, creating opportunities for himself and his family, becoming the first entrepreneur in his family, and making sure his children don't have to learn every lesson the hard way. Most importantly, Monte has a message for anyone who looks at their environment and believes there isn't another path: Have hope. Change your surroundings. Learn something new. Build your credit. Learn a trade. Start a business. Find another way forward. Your environment may help explain where you started — but it doesn't have to determine where you finish. This is Street Tales at its core: real stories, real mistakes, real growth, and honest conversations about what it takes to become something more than where you came from. Monte's original story is also featured in Street Tales Volume One, and his journey is part of the continuing work behind the Street Tales Docuseries. Ep. 114: The Stories Behind The Weight of Responsibility | Sgt. Maj. Dave Devaney
Sgt. Maj. Dave Devaney, USMC (Ret.), returns to the Street Tales Podcast for a deeper conversation about the stories behind _The Weight of Responsibility | Leadership Lessons from a Marine Sergeant Major. This time, we move beyond the photographs and dive into the experiences, people, friendships, hardships, and lessons that shaped Dave across 30 years in the United States Marine Corps. Dave takes us back to 1983 and the decision that changed the direction of his life, walking away from an Army recruiter and signing a Marine Corps contract on the spot. From there, we talk about the reality of recruit training at Parris Island, becoming a Drill Instructor, and the pressure, discipline, and standards that helped shape his approach to leadership. The conversation also explores a defining part of Dave's Marine Corps legacy: the Scout Sniper community. Dave discusses how he found his way into the sniper world, the Marines who helped develop his skills, the importance of institutional knowledge, and what can be lost when a military specialty, and the culture surrounding it disappears. But this episode isn't simply about the Marine Corps. It's about the people behind the rank. Dave shares stories about lifelong friends and fellow Marines, his experience walking the historic ground of Iwo Jima, and the sacrifices made by the family waiting at home. He reflects on his wife being beside him for 26 of his 30 years in uniform and the birthdays, Christmases, holidays, and moments that military families sometimes learn to celebrate whenever their Marine finally comes home. At the heart of the conversation is the message behind _The Weight of Responsibility_: leadership isn't just about rank, authority, or accomplishments. It's about responsibility, honesty, the people who shape you, and what you leave behind for the next generation. And when the rank, uniform, Marine Corps, and book are stripped away, Dave's answer about who he is today may say more than anything else: Grandpa. This is an honest, funny, unfiltered conversation about service, brotherhood, family, sacrifice, leadership, and a lifetime of lessons earned along the way. Ep. 113: The Weight of Responsibility | Sgt. Maj. Dave Devaney — The Stories Behind the Book
What does more than three decades of leadership, service, sacrifice, loss, brotherhood, and responsibility look like when the uniform finally comes off? In this special episode of the Street Tales Podcast, Tyler Martin sits down with Sgt. Maj. Dave Devaney, USMC (Ret.) to discuss their recently released book, The Weight of Responsibility | Leadership Lessons from a Marine Sergeant Major. This isn't simply a conversation about writing a book. Dave takes us behind the photographs and beyond the pages, sharing the stories and memories that shaped his life and Marine Corps career. The book contains 173 stories built around leadership lessons drawn from more than three decades of experience. From his years as an infantry Marine, Scout Sniper, Drill Instructor, instructor, and Sergeant Major to his experiences as a husband, father, mentor, and leader of Marines, Dave explains what those moments looked and felt like from the man who actually lived them. Some photographs open the door to stories that could never be captured by a caption: training Scout Snipers, jumping from a C-130, standing on Iwo Jima, becoming a Drill Instructor, the sacrifices made by Dave's family, and the responsibility of caring for the families of fallen Marines. The conversation also turns deeply personal as Dave discusses the Marines he lost, including Javier, the Marine to whom the book is dedicated, and an extraordinary moment years later when Dave unexpectedly found Javier's grave at Arlington National Cemetery while visiting with his grandchildren. There are serious moments, painful memories, leadership lessons - and plenty of the humor and unfiltered stories that come with a lifetime in the Marine Corps. Reading these stories is one thing; hearing them told by the man who was actually there is something entirely different. At its core, this episode asks the same question as the book: What does it really mean to carry the weight of responsibility when other people are counting on you? Ep. 112: Human Beings Doing Unusual Work | Dr. Allison Agliata on First Responder Mental Health
First responders aren't built differently—they're human beings doing psychologically unusual work. In this episode of the Street Tales Podcast, Tyler and Mo sit down with Dr. Allison Kanter Agliata, “Dr. A”—a licensed psychologist, former Air Force psychologist, resilience coach, and specialist in working with first responders, military members, high-demand professionals, and their families. Dr. A breaks down what repeated exposure to trauma can do to the mind and body, why saying “I’ve seen worse, I’m fine” doesn’t necessarily mean an incident hasn’t affected you, and why waiting until someone reaches their worst day to address mental health may already be too late. The conversation explores the fear many first responders have about seeking help, concerns surrounding confidentiality and career consequences, the importance of finding culturally competent mental health professionals, compartmentalization, post-trauma reactions, resilience training, peer support, and why preparing the mind should be treated with the same seriousness as preparing the body. Most importantly, Dr. A has a message for anyone struggling in silence: You’re not alone. 🧠 CONNECT WITH DR.
