Strong Face

You're enforcing a policy you fundamentally disagree with. You're delivering a message that contradicts your values. You're watching your team break under decisions you didn't make and can't change. And through all of it, you have to maintain composure. You have to keep leading. You have to put on a strong face. And somewhere in the middle of it all, you started wondering: Am I the problem? Should I be able to make this work? This podcast won't tell you how to fix everything. But it WILL help you see what's actually broken, what’s within your control, and when to stop carrying dysfunction that isn't yours to fix. This is Strong Face: the podcast for leaders caught between caring for their people and enforcing a system that wasn't built to do so… without losing themselves in the process. If you're a manager, director, or VP navigating workplace dysfunction, team leadership challenges, organizational culture issues, work stress, and burnout - this is for you. I'm Tamara Steward, and before I became an organizational consultant, I was you. I've had to enforce things I didn't believe in, lead through impossible contradictions, and navigate situations where the mission didn't align with what was actually happening on the ground. And I had to keep a Strong Face through it all. Now I work with leadership teams to redesign systems so they actually support people… But I didn't forget what it's like to be caught in the middle. In every episode, we'll take one situation - something you’re likely living through right now or have seen before. Your team building retreat that somehow made things worse. Your star employee who you think is about to quit. The same problem you’ve addressed three times but results in zero change. I'll show you what's actually broken. Not the surface problem everyone sees, but the structural issue. Then we'll explore what can *actually* help you.  It may be a specific conversation to try or a question that reveals where the real breakdown is. I’ll help you recognize whether the problem is yours to solve within your team or if it is a bigger systemic issue. Because some problems require organizational intervention, not personal sacrifice. This podcast will help you see the difference, so you can stop hiding behind your Strong Face.

Leading When You Don’t Have the Answers Yet (Clarity Deferred)
Something is changing at your company and the leaders above you haven’t shared what it means yet. Maybe a reorg was announced with half the details missing, or maybe you were handed a new mandate with no real parameters. Either way, you’re the one who has to stand in front of your team and keep them moving, while the answers to their questions are sitting somewhere above your pay grade. In this episode, we’re talking about how to lead through that gap when you’re still working through it yourself. Key takeaways: Why the leaders who handle this best aren’t the ones who had all the answers How to name what you can share (and what you can’t) without leaving your team totally in the dark Why anchoring your team to what you *do* know steadies them more than pretending to know the rest How to stop spinning on the decisions being made above you and act on the ones right in front of you This episode is for you if you’re leading your team through something you can’t see the full picture on yet. This is the exact thing I help leaders work through every day. The Depleted Leader (What to Do When You've Given Everything to Everyone Else)
You can't remember the last time you made it to the gym. Therapy's still just a note in your calendar from January. A friend is trying to reschedule the dinner you keep pushing, and at this point you've stopped promising a new date. Individually, they're not a big deal. But together they show that you've become your own last priority. In this episode, we're talking about the depleted leader. You have nothing left to give, and you think you're hiding it, but people know. They've started working around your bad days, and the resentment you don't even mean to feel is leaking out anyway. This episode is for you if you're the one everyone leans on, and you can't remember the last time you had someone to lean on yourself. Key takeaways: How to ask for help without it costing you the reputation you've spent years building Why every leader needs at least three people they can be honest with Why recovering from depletion takes longer than you think, and how to protect the time it needs How to get comfortable saying no to the things you'd normally absorb without thinking If this is resonating with you, I can help. The Feedback That Never Comes: What Staying Quiet Actually Costs You
There's a conversation you keep meaning to have. You've rehearsed it over and over again in your head, but every time you almost start the conversation, you find a reason it can wait until next week. In this episode, we're talking about the feedback that never comes. And it lands differently on everyone waiting for it. The tenured employee feels ambushed by a critique they never saw coming. The loyal one who slipped for the first time in years feels betrayed. And you, the leader who needs something you're not getting, quietly carries the frustration. No one wakes up excited to give hard feedback. So you wait, but the problem doesn't wait with you. It festers until the worst possible moment. Key takeaways: Why you can't hold someone accountable to a standard you never actually set, and the question to ask yourself before you try Why the best feedback (good and bad) happens in the moment instead of saved up for review season How to give hard feedback to a loyal employee without it landing like a betrayal Why naming the impact is what makes people actually change their behavior This episode is for you if someone on your team is repeating a mistake because you've been afraid to address it. “That's Just How They Are” (But At What Cost?)
Someone spoke to you in a way that would never be acceptable from anyone else in the room. Afterward, a colleague pulled you aside and said something meant to help: "That's just how they are." But you heard what nobody is saying out loud: "We decided their value outweighs your experience." In this episode, I'm breaking down what happens when one person is so 'valuable' to an organization that the friction they create gets waved away as the cost of doing business. Key Takeaways: The real cost of protecting one valuable person over the rest of the team How the halo effect blinds good leaders to behavior everyone else can see Why explained-away behavior never stays contained, it spreads The question that should follow "that's just how they are" every single time This episode is for you if you've ever explained someone's behavior to the person on the receiving end of it, because the truth was the organization couldn't afford to lose them.
