MAGIC: THE GATHERING, CONVENTIONS & CHAOS | Sideboard Therapy × Talk Fantasy To Me

What happens when four nerds walk into a convention with expensive cardboard, questionable financial decisions, elaborate cosplay, and absolutely no idea how much money they're about to spend? 😂 Graham and Andrew from Sideboard Therapy join Chase and Kyle for a massive Talk Fantasy To Me crossover episode diving into the worlds of Magic: The Gathering, Commander, trading card games, cosplay, comic and anime conventions, collecting, and nerd culture. We start with Magic: The Gathering from the ground up. What exactly is Commander? How do you build a deck? What are precons? How do mana, creatures, instants, sorceries, artifacts, enchantments, and Planeswalkers work? Graham and Andrew break down MTG for beginners while also getting into the deeper side of the hobby — competitive vs. casual Magic, alternate-art cards, Universes Beyond, Secret Lair, collector boosters, scalpers, expensive chase cards, and why some pieces of cardboard can cost an absolutely ridiculous amount of money. We also tackle the growing crossover between Magic and major franchises like Final Fantasy and Marvel, whether Universes Beyond is helping Magic reach new audiences or changing too much of its original identity, and how the MTG collector market compares with Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! Then we leave the card table and enter... THE CONVENTION FLOOR. 😈 Cosplayers. Celebrity hunters. Resellers. Vendor halls. Photographers. Questionable artwork. Convention etiquette. People stopping directly in the middle of crowded hallways. And, yes... the convention guests who apparently forgot deodorant exists. 😂 We share cosplay disasters, convention horror stories, celebrity encounters, first-timer mistakes, convention stereotypes, how expensive a weekend at a con can REALLY become, and why — despite all the chaos — we keep coming back. Whether you're a longtime Magic player, completely new to MTG, a collector, cosplayer, convention veteran, or just someone who enjoys watching four friends disappear down increasingly ridiculous nerd-culture rabbit holes, this episode has something for you.
