Baghdad's Persian Bureaucracy: The Diwan System

In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the administrative backbone of the Abbasid Caliphate that turned a nomadic Arab conquest into a settled imperial bureaucracy. We focus on the Diwan system, specifically how the Abbasids absorbed the Sassanian Persian civil service to manage taxation, military payroll, and provincial governance. You will meet key figures like Jafar al-Barmaki, who helped structure the Diwan al-Kharaj (land tax) and Diwan al-Barid (postal intelligence network). We examine how this fusion of Arab military authority with Persian bureaucratic expertise created the efficient state apparatus that allowed Baghdad to function as the center of the world, distinct from the purely religious or military focuses of previous episodes. #AbbasidCaliphate #BaghdadHistory #DiwanSystem #JafarAlBarmaki #SassanianEmpire #IslamicAdministration #DinarAndDiyar #BaytAlMal #DiwanAlKharaj #DiwanAlBarid #PersianBureaucracy #MedievalMiddleEast #ArabEmpire #TaxationHistory #PostalServiceHistory #FexingoHistory #HistoryPodcast #AncientIraq Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
