Why Men Are More Alone Than They Realize (And How To Fix It)

OCT 21, 202670 MIN

Description

Send us Fan Mail Nick Papadopoulos is an executive coach who has led men's groups for over 22 years and co-wrote The Men's Group: A Novel of Messy Friendships. One of his clients, a COO, came to him with a newborn at home, no intimacy in his marriage, a father dying of cancer, and a losing battle with his CFO. He'd tried talking to the neighborhood dads over beers, but all they wanted to discuss was the beer and the game. He needed a real conversation. We unpack why men's circles shrink as their lives get bigger, how a partner ends up as a man's therapist, coach, and priest all at once, and why "shoulder to shoulder" is where most guys connect but can't be where it stops. We get into low-pressure entry points, how to tell a solid room from the wrong one, why a hard sell is a red flag, and how you know a guy has truly arrived in a group. Nick also shares what he learned watching his father give his power away, and the night he sat with eight men and realized he'd found his people. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Book Links:  The Men's Group: A Novel of Messy Friendships by Jacob Fishbein & Nicholaos Papadopoulos Bookshop (supports local bookstores): https://bookshop.org/shop/AmericanMasculinity CONNECT WITH NICK Website: https://www.coachnick.com/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/coachnick/?isSelfProfile=false  RESOURCES MENTIONED Dude Talk Connecting Dinners: https://dudetalkdinners.org/  Free, guided dinners for men in eight Colorado communities. But in people who anger easily, especially with chronic pain, anger is linked to more pain, not less. Bonding over grievance: Sharing dislike of a specific person can make you like a stranger more. That's about liking, not speed, and no one has measured how long those bonds last. Hierarchy: Men support hierarchy between groups more than women, but that isn't the same as how men rank themselves in friendships. "Men need a container" is Tim's clinical read. 12-step: No crosstalk is common, not universal. Ask about the format before you go. Clinicians: That most clinicians don't help clients turn toward others, and that men's group members move faster in therapy, is Tim's read from practice, not established data. Mark Manson: The "second shared interest" idea holds. He's written about it for close to two decades rather than coaching it for 20 years. We focus on grounded tools, not yelling or clichés.
