Description
What happens when air inside a thunderstorm suddenly accelerates toward the ground instead of rising?
In this episode of The Climate Translation, Dr. Mac explores the science of downbursts, microbursts, and the destructive straight-line winds they can produce. Drawing on his own storm-chasing and television meteorology experience, he explains how precipitation loading, evaporation, melting, and cold dense air can combine to create powerful downdrafts that strike the surface and spread outward with hurricane-force winds.
The episode also examines how individual downbursts can organize into larger windstorms and derechos, including the damaging 2024 Houston derecho and the August 2026 Illinois–Indiana event. Finally, Dr. Mac looks at new research suggesting that a warming atmosphere may be creating more favorable environments for intense downdrafts, and why better forecasting, observations, warnings, and public understanding will become increasingly important.
