Turning Trauma Into Purpose: One PNP’s Journey to Private Practice, with Victoria McMullen

Send us Fan Mail Sometimes, the experiences that hurt us the most end up shaping the work we’re called to do. My guest today knows that firsthand. Victoria McMullen has spent more than 14 years caring for children, from her early days as a NICU nurse to her work as a pediatric nurse practitioner specializing in mental, behavioral and general health.  But her decision to open her own pediatric practice is rooted in a deeply personal experience. During the birth of her first child, an emergency C-section and premature delivery were made even more traumatic by a lack of communication from the operating room staff. In one of the most vulnerable moments of her life, she experienced firsthand what happens when a patient is left frightened and uninformed. That moment stayed with her and it helped shape a promise: that families in her care would never have to feel that same fear and uncertainty from a breakdown in communication. Today, she’s built a practice where individualized, family-centered care is at the heart of everything she does. We talked about her journey, her love of pediatrics, and why communication, compassion, and truly seeing the child and family matter so much in healthcare.
