Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900) was a German philosopher, cultural critic, and writer whose ideas challenged traditional morality, religion, and assumptions about human nature. His influential works include Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Beyond Good and Evil, and On the Genealogy of Morality. He is known for exploring individuality, self-overcoming, values, and the search for meaning. Freidrich Nietzche is attributed with saying… "You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist." This is a cool quote because there is usually more than one way to do things. Of course there are situations where there is a right answer. Facts, mathematics, scientific evidence and safety. But even with math there is more than one way. I was taught a certain way to solve equations when I was a kid. It is simple and it makes sense. But my kids are being taught this complicated way that takes longer and is harder to understand. And my daughter asked her teacher if she could do it my way on the test and he said if you do that you will get zero marks. So for him, his way is the right way, the correct way and the only way. Obviously he never read this quote because if he had he would know that doesn’t exist. In other areas of life like relationships, politics, religion, lifestyle, success, happiness and health, there is more room for disagreement. Our personal life experience gives us perspective that shapes our opinions. But don’t confuse your perspective with universal truth. This reminds me of the Michael Faraday quote we covered recently… “There is nothing quite as frightening as someone who knows they are right” Both of these quotes challenge the idea of intellectual certainty.I think the key here is to understand that we don’t have to abandon our beliefs in order to recognize that someone else also has a belief that is different from ours. And that neither of them are correct and certainly not the only way. So here’s the question: Where in your life might you be confusing your way with the only way? Remember, even the Mandalorian believed he knows the way. He said it all the time. "This is the way." But some other Mandalorians didn’t follow “the way”. They have their own way. You don’t have to give up your way. you just have to stop assuming it’s the only way. That’s going to do it for today. I’m Andrew McGivern signing off for now, but I’ll be back… tomorrow! Lewis Carroll is actually a pen name of English Writer, mathematician and logician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. He is best known for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, which became classics of children’s literature. Lewis Carroll or actually his character, Alice, once said… “It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.” This is an interesting one. We actually do change over time. Not literally into different people but every experience changes us a little. We learn, fail, succeed, meet people, lose people, change our priorities and see things differently. If you look back at the past and say, “How could I have been so stupid?”, the answer is simple… the person you used to be doesn’t have the same knowledge or experience you have today. The decisions you make today will be different and hopefully better than you did in the past. It is ok to look back at the past and try to learn from it. But trying to become the person you used to be doesn’t work. That person is gone. So here’s the question: How much of your past are you still judging yourself for, even though you’re no longer the person who made those choices? Let go of what the previous versions of you and make new and better choices with increased knowledge and experience you now have. That’s going to do it for today. Michael Faraday - “There is nothing quite as frightening as someone who knows they are right.”

Support the show Buy me a coffee Today’s quote comes from Michael Faraday. He was one of the great experimental scientists of the 19th century and his approach depended on questioning his own assumptions and testing ideas against evidence. You know, the scientific method! Michael Faraday once said… “There is nothing quite as frightening as someone who knows they are right.” First lets start with what this quote is not saying. At least I think so because I could be wrong. See what I did there. This quote isn’t an attack on confidence. It’s about what happens when confidence becomes certainty. The key word to focus on here is knows. There is a big difference between “I think I’m right” and “I know I’m right” Being confident about your ideas can help you take action and present your ideas, defend them or publish them. But being certain about your ideas can mean you stop listening. You dismiss contradictory evidence instead of investigating. This doesn’t just apply to science. It is the same in politics, relationships, work, parenting, business and everyday arguments. Being willing to say I might be wrong isn’t weakness. It is intellectual humility. Faraday is also documented as saying… “a person who is certain they're right is “almost sure to be wrong.” Michael Faraday’s career is a great example of this. He was always willing to test his theories and examine all possibilities. Progress comes from being willing to test your assumptions rather than protect them. So here’s the question: Have you ever been absolutely convinced you were right about something but later discovered you were wrong? I know I have. You don’t have to abandon your convictions. Just leave the door open for new evidence. Just like most things in life a little balance is the best way to go. Be confident enough to take action while remaining humble enough to discover that you might be wrong. That’s going to do it for today. Thich Nhat Hanh -“Nothing is more precious than being in the present moment. Fully alive, fully aware.”

I’ve read the first just the first 6 pages and it literally changed my life. Thich Nhat Hanh once said… “Nothing is more precious than being in the present moment. Fully alive, fully aware.” Life happens in the present moment. The past exists only in our memories and the future exists only in our expectations and imagination. The only moment we can directly experience is this one, right now. Being physically present is not the same being mentally present. You can sit beside someone you love while thinking about work, scrolling through your phone, or worrying about tomorrow. You may be there but you’re not fully there. What this quote means by fully alive and fully aware is that every experience becomes more powerful when you give them your full attention. The taste of your morning coffee, the warmth of the sun on your skin, a good conversation or a good laugh. I got the book The Miracle of Mindfulness for Christmas one year. It was in my stocking and although it is the kind of book I like reading, it sat on the coffee table for over a year. I didn’t pick it up until I was asked if I’m ever going to read it! I read the forward and it peaked my interest so I started the first chapter and by the time I got six pages in I had one of those light bulb moments. Thich Nhat Hanh wrote about a conversation he had with a friend who was always preoccupied with other thoughts no matter what he was doing. And I could relate. When I was walking the dog I felt I should be working. When I was at my son’s soccer game I felt like I should be writing or working on my website or something. When I was at the office I felt like I should be home with the family. No matter what I was doing I was thinking of something else.. I wasn’t really conscious of it as something bad… it was just the way it is.I felt that I never had the time for myself to do everything I wanted to do. And it created this underlying anxiety that was always there. Nagging away at me. I had divided my time into segments, time for family, time for work, time for the dog, time for projects and time for me. Well, in the book Hanh’s friend said he realized that he had all the time in the world to do everything he wanted to do. He had unlimited time for himself because he stopped thinking about his time being divided. His time for his kids was also his time. Time for his wife was also his time. Time for work was his time. He had all the time in the world for himself because it was all his time.I thought about this and realized that I have all the time I could possibly have. And in that moment I felt that anxiety evaporate. I put the book down thinking that maybe it wouldn’t last. So I decided to see how long until the anxiety came back. This was years ago and it never came back. Nothing in my life had actually improved (actually it got worse) but everything was better because I was fully present. So here’s the question: When was the last time you were completely present in the moment? Not thinking that you should be doing something else or thinking of the past or the future… but present in the moment. Remember all the time you have is your time! That’s going to do it for today. Confucius - “It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop.”
Welcome to the Daily Quote, the podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. Confucius (551–479 BCE) was an ancient Chinese philosopher and teacher whose ideas profoundly influenced Chinese culture and philosophy. He emphasized education, ethical behavior, respect for others, personal responsibility, and the importance of cultivating good character. His teachings were later compiled by his students and followers in the Analects.Confucius once said… “It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop.” Yesterday we talked about how a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. Today we taking it a little further by saying it doesn’t matter how slowly you go… just don’t stop. Slow progress is still progress. A small amount of progress, repeated consistently can eventually produce extraordinary results. The key is consistency over time. Starting something is exciting. Launching something new and celebrating the new venture is enticing. And finishing something is satisfying. But most of the journey happens in the middle when you’re doing all the work and nobody is celebrating it. No launch party, no victory lap… just work and more work. Progress happens when you continue even when your not inspired. One new episode isn’t much, one page written isn’t a lot. One new customer doesn’t make your business. But if you keep adding them up. Bingo! Sometimes going slowly is the only way you can go. Going fast can burn you out and then you have stopped. Don’t stop. So here’s the question: What is something in your life where you don’t need to go faster but you just need to keep going? That’s going to do it for today.
