What do bad dates, heartbreak, dating disasters, and dessert have in common? For author Julie Seyler, they became the inspiration for Gluten for Punishment: Just Desserts for the Heartbroken, Lovesick, and Jilted.
On this episode of The Delicious Culture with Jon Francois, Julie joins Jon for a hilarious and revealing conversation about dating, relationships, heartbreak, internet dating, comfort food, baking, and the emotional connection between food and memories. Julie explains how her decades of dating experiences became a memoir featuring six major relationships, dating missteps, blind dates, and 40 dessert recipes inspired by the stories in her life.
Julie and Jon also dig into some of the desserts connected to her stories, including a roseberry pavlova with lemon curd, whipped cream and fresh berries, banana cream pie with salted caramel, rice pudding, bread pudding, and other decadent desserts. They discuss how baking can become a form of comfort and even a kind of moving meditation after difficult experiences.
The conversation also takes some deliciously unexpected turns, including dessert and romance, dating red flags, narcissistic relationships, cooking and baking with a partner, book clubs, and the role food can play in emotional healing.
And because this is The Delicious Culture, Jon and Julie also talk pop culture, including Ted Lasso, Interview with the Vampire, Anne Rice, and The Vampire Lestat, as well as the debate over whether television shows are better enjoyed by binge-watching or savoring one episode at a time.
Julie also shares how readers can connect with her and explains how she brings desserts from her book to book clubs—including key lime tart and Viennese Whirl cookies.
