In Part 1 of this conversation, Dr. Haley sits down with oral surgeon Dr. Lora Parker to talk about the unexpected path that led her to oral surgery. Dr. Lora shares why she originally thought orthodontics was in her future, how a dental mission trip completely changed her direction, and what it took to become a competitive oral surgery applicant after making the decision relatively late in dental school. They also talk about Dr. Lora’s experience as a woman in a male-dominated specialty, the importance of female mentorship, and navigating residency and the early years of her career. Dr. Lora opens up about becoming a mom shortly after residency, unexpectedly delivering her daughter 10½ weeks early, navigating a lengthy NICU stay, and ultimately returning to work just two weeks after an emergency C-section. From choosing the right specialty to finding a supportive first job and navigating motherhood when your career doesn’t come with a traditional maternity leave, this episode is an honest conversation about building a career and a family when life doesn’t always go according to plan.
