The Educator Behind Wendy's Wonderful World | A Conversation with Barbara J. Satterfield

What happens when a lifelong educator transforms her love of teaching, gardening, and storytelling into a world of imagination for children? In this special bonus episode of The Diaspora Table, we welcome Barbara J. Satterfield, lifetime educator, LAUSD, children's author, and the creative mind behind Wendy's Wonderful World. Drawing on more than four decades of educational experience, Barbara shares the inspiration behind Wendy, a spirited gardener whose autumn adventures invite young readers to explore nature, curiosity, kindness, and the wonders of growing things. We explore how Wendy's Wonderful World connects storytelling with STEAM education—Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics—encouraging children to discover the relationship between gardening, seasons, nutrition, environmental awareness, and everyday learning. We'll also introduce audiences to another of Barbara's imaginative creations, Detective Super Skunk, whose adventures we'll explore more deeply in a future conversation. And there's something special growing beyond the pages! Join us as we celebrate the upcoming Wendy's Wonderful World book release and signing on Friday, October 30, 2026, at Vacancy Avenue Studio A in Inglewood, California.
