Description
Data-based decision making is essential in ABA, but data alone cannot tell us everything we need to know about a learner. Sometimes the numbers point us in one direction while our clinical judgment and what we’re observing suggest something different.
We talk about why data and clinical judgment may not always align and what we should consider before making changes to a program. Context, treatment integrity, motivation, environmental changes, measurement limitations, and the level of support a learner receives can all influence what the data show. We also discuss situations where a skill looks mastered on paper but isn’t generalized or making a meaningful difference in the learner’s everyday life.
Clinical judgment isn’t the same as relying on instinct or a gut feeling. It means using our expertise alongside reliable data, observations, collaboration, and knowledge of the learner. Ultimately, our goal is to make decisions that are both data informed and learner centered.
