Is Your Heart Deceitful? | The Real Meaning of Jeremiah 17:9

Is the heart “desperately wicked,” or have we been reading Jeremiah 17:9 out of context? In this conversation, Jamie and Donna Winship (co-founders of Identity Exchange and authors of Living Fearless and The War of Worldviews) unpack one of the most misused verses in the Bible and show how a separation worldview turns a hopeful passage into something scary. They walk through the full context of Jeremiah 17:5–10: the curse on the person who trusts in human strength versus the blessing on the one who trusts in the Lord—like a tree planted by water that is not anxious in the year of drought. They explain the Hebrew idea of the heart as “slippery” or treacherous (not simply “wicked”), why going into that inner landscape alone is dangerous, and how Christ as guide transforms the wilderness into living water. They connect this to Romans 12:1–2 (the renewing of the nous—the eye of the heart) and Ephesians 1:17–19 (the eyes of the heart flooded with light), inviting you to explore the true depth of who you are with the Holy Spirit as your guide rather than condemning or shutting down your own heart.
