A backlink is a referral before it is a ranking signal. In this episode, Jeff strips the jargon off the backlink conversation and puts it back where it belongs: another business, another organization, somebody in your town, telling their people to go see you.
A referral has two halves — who makes it, and what it says — and most businesses get both wrong. The first half comes with a test: would you want this link if Google were to switch off tomorrow? A partner that sends you customers passes. A page nobody in your town will ever visit was never a referral; it's paperwork. And the direction owners forget: every link you give is you staking your name on where your customers end up.
The second half is the sentence around your name. Your business name tells Google you exist. Your trade and your town tell Google what you are and where you are. That sentence is being written by other people — the chamber, the sponsor page, the partner's site — and most owners have never read it.
Jeff closes with a real example — a Houston headshot photographer who holds the #1 spot for "business headshots Houston" because every recommendation he earns says the same three things — and an afternoon's worth of diagnostic questions you can answer without a single SEO tool.
