Description
Megan Kane hadn't been farther north than South Carolina when a near stranger asked her to jump in his white van and drive 15 hours to the East Coast. She said yes, after checking with her mom.
That stranger was drummer Dylan Turner. His singer had quit by text the day before a run of shows he'd already sold tickets for. He'd met Megan a week or two earlier and had never heard her sing. "I unashamedly slid in her DMs basically begging her to come sing with my band," he told host Aaron Perlut on the Load Out Music Podcast.
Eight years later they're married, and Parker Barrow, the Nashville band built around them, has a new album out called Hold the Mash. It's blues-driven Southern rock with dueling guitars and a screaming organ, which makes them a strange fit in a town built on pop country.
Dylan wrote much of the record with lead guitarist Alex Bender, trading riffs on the road as ideas hit. The album also includes a cover of the Black Crowes' "My Morning Song," the first track new guitarist Will Tipton recorded with the band.
The name came from Dylan's dad, half as a joke. Megan and Dylan had spent the COVID lockdown watching Bonnie and Clyde films and documentaries, and the comparison stuck. They say they've spent about ten days apart since they met.
"We're not necessarily running from something like the law," Dylan said. "We're more so running to something like our dreams."
