The six-inch gap in the roll door let air out - did they make it?
In this episode, we follow the morning the Aldermere Municipal Archive discovered millions missing from its locked vault and the small clues that opened the investigation. What do a jogger’s call, a mold remediation shutdown, and a maintenance contractor's invoice tell us about how the theft may have been carried out?
Date: April 8, 2019
Location: Aldermere Municipal Archive
Person: Crystal Chambers
Person: Clifford Wilson
Event: HVAC shutdown and valid alarm access code at 4:41 AM
- A jogger, Crystal Chambers, spotted a six-inch gap at the bottom of the Archive's loading-bay roll door and called it in at 6:09 AM.
- The vault alarm log shows a valid access code entered at 4:41 AM while the vault appeared locked and undisturbed.
- Facilities supervisor Clifford Wilson handled contractor approvals and submitted a remediation contract priced at $14,800, below the director's countersignature threshold.
- Shaft C-4 is a 24-inch concrete filter-access shaft linking the mechanical room to the vault sub-floor; it was entered by three people at 11:18 PM the night before.
- The Shaft C-4 access panel's four screws came out unevenly: two removed cleanly, two cross-threaded as if forced in the dark while moving quickly.
