Phoenician Spies: How Tyre Survived Assyria

In Episode 254, Lucas and Luna explore the shadowy world of Phoenician espionage during the late eighth century BCE. While earlier episodes covered their trade routes and alphabet, this conversation focuses on how the city-state of Tyre survived the brutal siege by Sennacherib through a network of spies and diplomatic maneuvering. We examine the role of Philip of Tyre, the king’s spymaster, who fed critical intelligence to the Assyrian court, allowing Tyre to maintain its autonomy. The episode details the geopolitical tension between the Neo-Assyrian Empire and the Levantine kingdoms, highlighting how information was as valuable as timber or purple dye. Listeners will learn about the specific tactics used to delay conquest, the cultural significance of loyalty in ancient diplomacy, and how Tyre’s survival set the stage for its later prominence under Nebuchadnezzar II. This narrative draws from Menander of Ephesus and Josephus, offering a fresh perspective on the 'silent war' that shaped the ancient Mediterranean. #Tyre #Sennacherib #PhilipOfTyre #NeoAssyrianEmpire #LevantHistory #AncientEspionage #MenanderOfEphesus #JosephusAntiquities #PhoenicianDiplomacy #SiegeOfTyre #AncientIntelligence #BaalHammon #Melqart #MiddleEastHistory #BronzeAgeCollapseLegacy #AncientMediterranean #FexingoHistory #History Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
