Description

Let Me Know Your Thoughts and Question. In this powerful episode of The Secret World of Human Trafficking, host David J. Story speaks with author, filmmaker, and survivor Ken Tipton about experiences he says began when he was a young Boy Scout in the 1960s. Ken shares his personal account of being sexually abused, groomed, and eventually exploited within what he describes as an organized network involving adults connected to Scouting. He explains how his search for a father figure and acceptance made him vulnerable to adults who gained his trust, provided attention and affection, and gradually crossed boundaries. Ken discusses the complicated psychology of grooming and why children may not immediately recognize exploitation as abuse. He describes how affection, gifts, money, belonging, secrecy, and emotional dependency can be used to influence a child. His story also demonstrates why a child's feelings toward an abuser can be extremely complicated—and why survivors may struggle for decades with guilt, shame, confusion, and silence. Ken also recounts troubling events he says occurred at Lost Valley, a former Scout camp near St. Louis, and discusses allegations of abuse, exploitation, travel, recruitment of other boys, and failures by adults and institutions to protect children. Decades later, the Boy Scouts of America bankruptcy and the large number of sexual-abuse claims prompted Ken to confront his own past and make his story public. He wrote about his experiences and began speaking openly about what happened, hoping other survivors will recognize that they are not alone. The conversation concludes with an important message for parents: pay attention to changes in a child's behavior, particularly withdrawal, distress, secrecy, or sudden emotional changes. Most importantly, create an environment where children know they can talk openly without fear of punishment or blame. Ken says his goal in telling his story is not simply to expose the past, but to help survivors release the guilt and shame they may have carried for years—and to help families recognize how grooming can happen. This episode contains mature discussions of childhood sexual abuse, exploitation, and trafficking and may not be appropriate for all listeners.
