A stranger pounds on the door and claims he needs a candle to catch Spring-Heeled Jack. Moments later, a young woman named Jane Alsop is fighting off a figure with claw-like hands and a mouth that reportedly breathes blue-white fire. That is not a campfire story we made up, it’s one of the most infamous Victorian London reports that helped launch a legend. We start with the earliest accounts, the repeating details, and the unsettling pattern of attacks that seem designed to terrify rather than steal.  From there, we zoom out to the world that allowed the myth to catch fire: fog, patchy gas streetlights, industrial smoke, and a city primed for rumor. Once the newspapers get involved and the Lord Mayor publicly reads a letter about the attacks, the fear turns official and spreads fast.
