Embracing Mortality: A Doorway, Not a Dead End with Emma Pearson - 347

Description

I'll be honest ... when I first came across Emma Pearson's work, I wasn't sure what to make of it. She talks about embracing mortality as a way to become a better leader. And my first reaction was ... really? I mean, most of us spend a fair amount of energy trying not to think about death, so how on earth could getting closer to it help us live and lead better? But the more I read, the more curious I became. And that's why I invited her onto the show. Emma is a British organisational psychologist, leadership and transformation coach, author and grief and mortality awareness practitioner based near Geneva. Her work explores what happens when the old life has ended and the new one has not yet taken shape, and how we might inhabit that threshold without forcing grief into resolution, resilience or a tidy story of growth. Rooted in both professional practice and profound personal loss, Emma works with individuals, leaders, teams and organisations navigating transition, loss and endings. She has volunteered with an end-of-life hospice since 2016. Her memoir, 'Still Fire Inside' is published on 21 October 2026 and explores how terrible loss and an enduring love of life can coexist. In this conversation, we explore how profound loss can change the way we see ourselves and the world, why grief and a full, vibrant life aren't necessarily opposites, and what our awareness of mortality might teach us about the choices we make. We also get into some fascinating territory around regenerative leadership, systemic constellations and our relationship with time. And because this is The Speaking Club, we explore something I think is especially important for speakers: how do you share painful, deeply personal stories truthfully, without overwhelming your audience or wrapping everything up in a neat, inspirational bow? It's a conversation that challenged some of my own thinking, and I suspect it might challenge yours too. What you'll discover: • How a profound personal loss led Emma to question the way we live and lead • Why thinking about death might actually change the way you approach life • Whether grief and a vibrant, fulfilling life can exist side by side • The strange in-between space where your old life has gone but your new one hasn't quite begun • Why Emma resists turning her experience into a tidy story of tragedy and triumph • What our awareness of mortality might reveal about the way we lead others • How facing uncomfortable truths could influence the decisions leaders make • What regenerative leadership and systemic constellations actually mean • Why concepts like deep time and the great turning might change your perspective • How to share stories of death, grief and suicide without overwhelming your audience • Why not every powerful personal story needs a happy ending Enjoy!
