David faced this exact situation when Shimei cursed him and threw stones at him during one of the lowest points of his reign. David had the opportunity to retaliate, but instead he chose to trust God. He understood that kingdom battles must be fought with spiritual weapons, while personal battles must sometimes be left in God's hands. Bitterness builds its own story, but our response to criticism doesn't have to be retaliation. Because of Jesus, we can respond with grace, mercy, and redemption. David was a flawed king who sometimes had to live by faith in a “maybe” of what God would do. But Jesus is the better King who became a curse for us so that we could receive redemption and the promise of the Spirit. Your answer to criticism is not retaliation but redemption.
