“Be Still and Know That I Am God” Doesn’t Mean What You Think | Psalm 46

Description

People chose an electric shock over 15 quiet minutes alone with their thoughts. Be still and know that I am God was never a spa verse. I research for fun. I love thinking. And I’m honestly not sure I’d make it fifteen minutes in that room. So I went three hours deep on why, and it took me from a 2014 study, to a French mathematician who saw this coming 350 years earlier, to an army outside the walls of Jerusalem. Psalm 46:10 is on mugs, signs, and sunrise photos. Read Psalm 46 in context and “be still” is spoken over a battlefield, by a God who breaks the bow and shatters the spear. You’ll walk away knowing why the quiet feels unbearable, what the Hebrew behind “be still” means, and three practices for the next time you feel the itch to reach. 00:00 The Shock Button Study 01:15 Why We Hate Thinking 02:48 Meet Blaise Pascal 03:44 Diversion and Distraction 05:22 We Are All The King 06:52 Be Still Misread 08:05 Siege of Jerusalem 10:40 Battlefield Meaning 12:36 Pascal’s Night of Fire 14:14 What’s In the Quiet 14:53 Three Practices to Try This week on Substack I wrote about the weekend the cell service quit on us in the mountains at my brother’s wedding, and what being unplugged showed me about what I value.
