The Truth Lies In Bedtime Stories

Why truth and lies matter: https://bit.ly/Truth_Lies_Climate In this 10th and final episode, we tie up the loose ends of the story of Mongolia's only deep-sea navigator, in the process telling the unforgettable story of The Tallest Woman in Mongolia. Music Notes: the music used in this episode was recorded by the great ethnomusicologist Jean Jenkins in the spring of 1974, at a (then) permanent encampment near the Mongolian capital, Ulaan Baatar. It comes from a CD of Mongolian music produced for Topic World Series. The title is Ort Saikhan, 'My Beautiful Brown Horse'. The lyrics of the song are a homage to the horse of such legendary patriotic devotion, he ran 2000 kilometres back from Beijing to die in his Mongolian homeland. Our edit, however, doesn·t include any of these words. The singer on this track was the famous long song singer Dorj Dawa, who was then reckoned to be in his 70s. But we don't hear his voice in the parts of the track we used. Dorj Dawa was accompanied by two unnamed musicians, one playing the Morin Khur (horsehead fiddle) the other an unidentified type of Mongolian flute. The bits we've used, however, don't use anything with the flute. We don't even hear his voice in the parts of the track we used. Like we say, facts are important, sometimes. Monghur plays his own composition for solo yatga (a type of Mongolian zither), entitled Hoir sit gild (The Love of Two Young Men). There's some debate about the authenticity of modern yatga (or yataga). Once a standard instrument in court music, the Mongolian version fell into disuse, and the instrument played by Monghur is likely to be derived from the Korean version of the zither. Similar instruments are also staples of Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese court ensembles. Written, Produced & Narrated by SternWriter Audio Production by Samuel Wain

CD of Mongolian music produced for Topic World Series. It's a short form song called Garyn Arvan Huriin (Ten Fingers of the Hand), and is performed by Monyi, a camel herder from south-west Mongolia. The lyrics tell of 'long straight fingers with a ring of pure gold', and ask why her lover has hemmed his sleeves in black silk, and given his love to a foreigner. Garyn Arvan Huriin was a popular song in the 70s, often played on state radio, where Monyi may well have first heard it. Written, Produced and Narrated by SternWriter Audio Production by Samuel Wain
