Umayyads and the Khazars: The Battle of Ardabil

We revisit the volatile northern frontier where the Umayyad Caliphate clashed with the Khazar Khaganate, focusing on the pivotal Battle of Ardabil in 730 CE. While previous episodes touched on Qutayba ibn Muslim’s campaigns in Transoxiana and the naval wars with Byzantium, this episode zooms in on the brutal cycle of revenge that defined the Caucasus border. We explore how General al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf orchestrated a massive retaliatory expedition led by his son-in-law, Marwan ibn Muhammad, after the earlier defeat at the hands of the Khazar commander Balir. You will hear about the tactical decisions made near the Araxes River, the role of Yazid ibn al-Muhallab in holding the line, and the complex diplomatic games involving local Armenian and Caucasian allies. This is not just another battle report; it is a look at how imperial overreach and personal vendettas shaped the religious and political landscape of the early eighth century Middle East. #UmayyadCaliphate #KhazarKhaganate #BattleOfArdabil #MarwanIbnMuhammad #alHajjajIbnYusuf #YazidIbnalMuhallab #Balir #AraxesRiver #Transoxiana #CaucasusHistory #IslamicExpansion #SteppeEmpires #730CE #MiddleEastHistory #MilitaryStrategy #AbbasidRise #FexingoHistory #History Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
