Umayyads and the Khazars: The Battle of Ardabil

We return to the volatile northern frontier where the Umayyad Caliphate clashed repeatedly with the Khazar Khaganate, focusing specifically on the pivotal Battle of Ardabil in 730 CE. This engagement was not merely a skirmish but a catastrophic defeat for the Umayyads that reshaped the geopolitical landscape of the Caucasus. We examine the career of Yazid ibn al-Muhallab, the governor of Azerbaijan who led the campaign against the Khazar forces under Balir. The episode explores the tactical errors, the brutal retaliation by Khazar commanders, and the subsequent rise of Marwan ibn Muhammad, who would later restore order and stabilize the region. By looking at Ardabil, we understand how military failure on the northern border influenced internal politics in Damascus and highlighted the limits of Umayyad expansion beyond the Araxes River. #UmayyadCaliphate #KhazarKhaganate #BattleOfArdabil #YazidIbnAlMuhallab #MarwanIbnMuhammad #Balir #AraxesRiver #Transoxiana #CaucasusHistory #IslamicExpansion #MedievalMiddleEast #AbdAlMalik #HishamIbnAbdAlMalik #AzerbaijanHistory #MuslimConquests #SteppeEmpires #FexingoHistory #History Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
