X-Men: The Xtreme Review (Animated Shows)

The X-Men are about to matter even more in the MCU, so we went back to the source and did a full-on extreme review of the animated era that shaped how a lot of us think about mutants. We rewatch X-Men: The Animated Series from the 90s and track the big swings: Sentinel panic, Magneto’s ideology war with Professor X, Apocalypse-level threats, and why the Phoenix saga became the franchise’s most reused weapon. We also keep it real about what doesn’t hold up, including rushed one-off endings and the season five budget-cut vibe that you can see on character designs. Then we jump into X-Men Evolution, where the tone flips into teen mutant growing pains and it actually feels authentic: Kitty fighting the call, Rogue needing time before trust, and the messy social cost once mutants go public. From there it’s Wolverine And The X-Men, a tighter, more militant “rebuild the team” story with MRD pressure, dystopian Sentinel stakes, and Emma Frost getting real shine. Along the way, we call out characters we want Marvel to stop treating like afterthoughts, especially Polaris. We close with X-Men 97 seasons one and two, from the Madelyne Pryor clone bomb to Genosha tragedy, Rogue and Gambit heartbreak, Magneto’s global retaliation, and a time-spanning Apocalypse clash that aims big even when continuity gets a little wobbly.
