Anime Lightning #7 (Summer 2026): Gamers & Academy Life

Summer 2026 anime is the kind of season where your watchlist can spiral out of control fast, so I decided to do Anime Lightning: rapid-fire mini reviews with a clear verdict and a score. I’m bouncing from a villainess revenge fantasy where betrayal turns into a full-on takedown plan, to action shows that had me begging for more seasons, to sequels that actually expand their worlds instead of just repeating the same arc. Along the way, I get into what made Clevatess season two pop for me, why Black Torch still stings as a cut-short adaptation, and how school settings can either feel like filler or feel like the moment a story finally grows branches. I also talk about creator-focused anime energy with Draw This Then Die, because the manga industry angle hits on burnout, competition, and that uncomfortable truth that “genius” doesn’t always look kind up close. Then we take a hard left into concept shows and comfort vibes: Tomb Raider King’s relic arms race with real strategy, The Drops of God turning wine into dramatic mystery puzzles, and Victoria of Many Faces leaning into reinvention, found family, and a spy past that will not stay buried. I wrap with one of my biggest surprises: Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games, a comedy that goes all-in on secret Street Fighter VI sessions at a proper elite girls academy, and it’s way funnier and smarter than it sounds.
