Therapy on the Go

“Worst-case scenario.” Three words that can take our minds places we never needed to go. Why is it that when we’re faced with uncertainty, our brains so quickly jump to the negative? We fill in the blanks, make assumptions, and create entire stories based on things we don’t actually know. And more often than not, those stories aren’t facts. They’re fiction. That's why Kim Dillon, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor with Therapeutic Partners, PLLC, is here today to tell us and our lovely host Madison to separate what we know from what we assume. Not everything we fear is true, and not every unanswered question needs a worst-case ending. Today's Takeaway: "We have to focus on the facts."

What did you have for dinner last night? Because your eating habits can directly connect to your mood. We've all seen the "You get a little angry when you're hungry... eat a snickers" commercial before, maybe they were kind of telling the truth? That's why Kim Dillon, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor with Therapeutic Partners, PLLC, is here today to tell us and our lovely host Madison the scientific reasoning behind why we need to start eating better to lessen our stress levels. Today's Takeaway: "If you wanna change your mood, start by changing your food."

Vagus Nerve? They definitely don’t teach us enough about this in science class, but it’s something we all have. The vagus nerve acts like a steering wheel for your body’s “rest and digest” system. A healthy vagal tone can help your body bounce back from stress, but when your nervous system is constantly on high alert, it can be harder to calm down than it needs to be. That’s why today’s Therapy Session with Kim Dillon is all about the vagus nerve and some simple tricks you can try to help regulate your nervous system. Today’s Takeaway: “When anxiety starts to crawl, the vagus nerve is who you call.”

Like the song says "lean on me, when you're not strong, I'll be your friend. I'll help you carry on." But sometimes it's hard to lean on someone without it getting thrown back on to you. Kim Dillon with Therapeutic Partners, PLLC is here with our host, Madison to discuss the "mental load" parents and partners may feel when they get overwhelmed with all of life's crazy decisions. Today's Takeaway: "A happy home doesn't run on a boss and a helper, it runs on a team! So stop asking for help and start sharing the ownership."

Those ultra-reliable people, the ones constantly on the go and doing stuff for others? Could actually be dealing with High-Functioning anxiety. It might be more obvious than you think, some people might confuse it with striving for success, but the difference between the two is that High-Functioning anxiety is actually being driven by motivation, it's driven by fear of failure. Does this sound like you? Take a listen to this week's therapy on the go with licensed therapist Kim Dillon with Therapeutic Partners, PLLC and our host, Madison, to learn about identifying and breaking this cycle. Today's Takeaway: "Stop just surviving your life and start living it."
