Description
In 1986, 19-year-old Jeanne Clery was a student at Lehigh University when another student gained access to her dormitory through security doors that had been propped open.
Joseph Henry was later convicted in connection with Jeanne's death, but for her parents, Howard and Connie Clery, the case exposed much bigger questions about campus security and what colleges were required to tell students about crime.
In this episode of True Crime Recaps, we look at Jeanne's story, the circumstances surrounding what happened at Lehigh University, and her parents' campaign for greater transparency and accountability on college campuses.
Their efforts helped lead to landmark federal legislation in 1990, later known as the Clery Act, which changed how colleges and universities report crime and communicate campus safety information to students.
This is the story of Jeanne Clery, her family's campaign for change, and the legacy that continues on American campuses today.
