Description
Across almost the entire sky lies ancient radiation released when the universe was still extremely young.
Its tiny temperature variations eventually became galaxies, clusters, and the enormous cosmic web we see today. But hidden inside that remarkably uniform pattern is an unusually large cold region known simply as the Cold Spot.
Astronomers have searched for structures between us and the ancient light that might explain it. They have found an enormous underdense region in roughly the same direction, but whether that structure can fully account for the anomaly remains uncertain.
The Cold Spot may ultimately be an unlikely statistical fluctuation. Or it may be telling us something deeper about the universe we thought we understood.
