Description
Lindsay Clancy Trial, Social Media Obsession & Meta's Billion-Dollar Youth Safety Settlement | We Win Injury Law Podcast...
Why are we so obsessed with watching trials unfold in real time?
From viral courtroom clips and TikTok theories to one of the most closely watched trials in America, social media is changing the way the public follows and reacts to the legal system.
In this episode of the We Win Injury Law Podcast, Tyler Todd and Jaron Sandberg discuss the public fascination with high-profile trials, the Lindsay Clancy case, social media algorithms, criminal responsibility, and the major multistate legal action involving Meta and youth safety.
THE LINDSAY CLANCY CASE
At the time this episode was recorded, the jury in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial had spent five days deliberating and reported that it was unable to reach a unanimous decision.
The case centered on a devastating and largely undisputed question: What happened and was Lindsay Clancy legally criminally responsible for her actions?
Clancy admitted to killing her three children in 2023. Her defense argued that she was suffering from severe mental illness and should not be held criminally responsible, while prosecutors argued that she acted deliberately and understood her actions.
The jury was ultimately unable to reach a unanimous verdict, and a judge declared a mistrial on September 4, 2026. A mistrial is not a conviction or an acquittal, and the future of the criminal case remains subject to further legal proceedings.
META, SOCIAL MEDIA & YOUTH SAFETY
The conversation then turns to one of the biggest technology and consumer-protection stories in the country.
Utah and dozens of other states reached a major agreement with Meta over allegations concerning the safety of young people on Facebook and Instagram.
The states alleged that Meta used features that encouraged excessive use by young people and failed to adequately protect younger users from certain harms. Those were legal allegations not findings made by a jury after trial.
The agreement includes substantial financial payments and proposed changes involving youth safety, age assurance, parental tools, and how certain platform features operate for younger users. The agreement remains subject to the applicable legal approval process.
As technology becomes a bigger part of everyday life, questions about corporate responsibility, product design, consumer protection, and personal accountability are becoming more complicated than ever.
WHY ARE TRIALS BECOMING ENTERTAINMENT?
Court cases that once received limited media coverage can now generate millions of views overnight.
A single clip can go viral.
A witness can become a meme.
And millions of people can develop strong opinions about a case without ever seeing the full evidence presented in court.
We discuss whether social media is giving the public greater access to the justice system or creating a new problem where algorithms and viral moments influence public perception before a case is fully understood.
