From story to headline
Who Shapes the Story? Alexander Likhtman on PR, Media and Trust A company has something to announce. A PR team turns it into a story. A journalist decides whether it matters. An editor decides whether it deserves space. By the time the headline reaches us, most of that process has disappeared. In Episode 25 of xChief Podcast, Alexander Likhtman explores the machinery behind business news and media relations. The conversation starts with a distinction that sounds simple but changes the way the whole industry looks: advertising can buy attention, while PR is ultimately trying to create trust. From there, we examine how journalists choose stories, why some companies consistently earn coverage while others depend on paid placements, and how timing can determine whether an announcement becomes part of the news cycle or disappears completely. We also discuss sponsored content, commercial departments, crisis preparation and the gray area between legitimately shaping a narrative and trying to manipulate it. The final part of the episode moves beyond traditional media. As AI systems increasingly use public information to answer questions and make recommendations, companies are beginning to communicate not only with journalists and readers, but indirectly with algorithms as well. An episode about everything that happens before a story becomes “the news.” Episode partner: xChief Central Asia https://go.xchief.kz/6e2319 Timestamps: 00:36 — What PR actually does 01:36 — How a company story becomes news 05:59 — Education, journalism and learning the profession 07:17 — What AI changes in communications 16:12 — Money and incentives inside the media ecosystem 21:28 — The economics of sponsored coverage 24:55 — Why some companies earn media attention 27:25 — Competing for the news cycle 30:12 — Why timing can make or break a story 33:17 — What happens when negative coverage appears 35:02 — Influence, reputation and manipulation 38:46 — When a reputational problem becomes a crisis 41:10 — Preparing before the crisis begins 44:19 — Why stories are harder to copy than products 45:59 — Spotting content created in someone’s interest 47:02 — PR for the age of AI 49:52 — How to question the stories we consume

Who's behind the money
Who is investing in Kazakhstan today — and what does the local market actually offer a private investor? In this episode of xChief Podcast, financial expert and Best Finance creator Pavel Bondarenko breaks down Kazakhstan’s investment landscape: the changing profile of local investors, the principles behind managing personal finances, and the role of the KASE stock exchange in the country’s capital market. The conversation looks at how investors approach domestic and global markets, why financial goals should come before choosing specific instruments, and how Kazakhstan’s investment culture has evolved alongside the market itself. We also discuss market access, the role of qualified-investor status, tax incentives, regulation, new investment formats and the broader outlook for Kazakhstan’s capital market. A key part of the conversation is how changing regulation can affect the rights and opportunities available to private investors. Another xChief Podcast conversation from xChief Central Asia about how Kazakhstan’s financial market works, who participates in it and what may shape its next stage of development. You’re already playing
Working all day and then relaxing with a game that looks suspiciously like work should make no sense. Yet millions of people do exactly that. Nadezhda Chervyakova and Yulia Kazakova explore what changes when an activity becomes voluntary. A game can still demand concentration, repetition and difficult decisions, but it gives the player something many jobs remove: agency. From there, the conversation moves far beyond video games. Why do children naturally experiment while adults increasingly rely on familiar patterns? Why can too much freedom become stressful? And why do people look for games, scrolling or other simple activities when real-life decisions become overwhelming? For business, the distinction becomes especially important. A leaderboard is not automatically gamification, and a KPI is not a game simply because somebody added points to it. Effective game design has to consider motivation, autonomy, competence, connection and the behavior a company actually wants to change. The episode also breaks down the difference between gamification and business simulations, how companies use game-based systems during training and transformation, and why reflection after the game can matter more than winning it. On xChief Podcast, produced within the xChief Central Asia media ecosystem, the bigger question is simple: how much of everyday behavior is already shaped by rules, feedback and games we rarely notice? The product with no plan
Your bank does not need to believe you have done something illegal before it starts asking questions. What matters first is whether your behavior still looks like you. A salary that suddenly triples can make perfect sense when someone becomes a CEO. The same jump in income, arriving through unexplained cash deposits or third parties, tells the monitoring system a very different story. Banks work with patterns, deviations and risk signals long before a human employee ever looks at the case. Victoria Tsoy takes us inside that invisible layer of personal finance. We discuss how transaction monitoring works, why dormant accounts and excessive borrowing can affect the way a client is assessed, and how legitimate money can still be delayed until its source is documented. The episode also challenges several assumptions about credit. Paying everything back as quickly as possible might sound responsible, but certain repayment patterns can appear unusual to automated scoring systems. Repeatedly borrowing to cover previous debt is an even clearer warning sign. Then comes a harsher question: can you effectively lose access to the financial system without committing a crime? Victoria explains how unpaid private obligations, enforcement procedures and damaged financial reputation can restrict access to accounts — and how reputation can eventually be rebuilt. For founders and freelancers, we turn to another common problem: treating company revenue and personal money as one pool. It may work while the numbers are small, but at scale it becomes almost impossible to understand what the business actually owns, spends or can reinvest. This is not an episode about hiding from the bank. It is about understanding what the bank sees when it looks at you.
