Mussolini banned this movie. Goebbels demanded it be pulled. Eighty-four years later, major distributors still won't touch it. Why does Ayn Rand's We the Living still scare people?
Mussolini ordered every copy destroyed. Its producers hid the negatives in a basement and sent a different film to be burned in its place. Ayn Rand then refused to let anyone see it for decades. This is the incredible true story of We the Living.
Yaron Brook calls it the best movie ever made from an Ayn Rand novel. In this episode he talks with four-time Emmy winner Duncan Scott, who sat alone with Ayn Rand in a dark editing room and re-cut the film reel by reel to her exact instructions.
Fascist Italy took Rand's first novel in 1942 without her knowledge. Officials expected anti-Soviet propaganda. Instead, Italians saw their own lives on screen, with the shortages, the fear, and the missing freedom. The film became Italy's #1 box-office hit, and then it vanished. One of its stars joined the anti-fascist underground and hid American soldiers in Rome. Lawyers Hank and Erika Holzer spent two years hunting through Italy for the lost negatives. Now the film has been digitally restored, frame by frame, and it is touring the world, including a screening in Kyiv during an air raid.
The restored film is coming to Australia for the first time, with premieres in Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane in February and March 2027. Duncan Scott will be there in person. Yaron and Duncan explain why a 1942 film about three young people crushed by a dictatorship speaks to today more loudly than ever.
About Duncan Scott: Duncan Scott is a film and television director and producer. He has more than 150 productions to his credit and four Emmy® Awards. He has worked with Woody Allen, Margaret Mead, Eric Clapton and Michael Caine. Much of his career has gone into projects that promote freedom. He worked with Ayn Rand to restore We the Living. He consulted on the Atlas Shrugged film series and on a stage adaptation of Anthem. He directs the Objectivist History Project, a nonprofit that is building a video history of the early Objectivist movement. Duncan is a member of the Directors Guild of America, the Writers Guild of America, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, and the Creative Council of The Moving Picture Institute.
