112: The Fork in the Road That Changed My Life

You hear me say I never want to date or get married again. What you haven't heard is everything it took for me to say those words. And I don't think I fully understood it myself until recently. How does a woman spend most of her life wanting to find the right man, only to reach a point where she no longer wants one at all? What has to happen for her to walk away from something she once believed was essential to her happiness? Fourteen years ago, I made a decision that would change the direction of my life. I had no idea where it would take me, what it would cost me, or how many times I'd have to make that decision again. There were moments when I barely recognized myself. Moments when choosing differently hurt more than staying where I was. And moments when I discovered that some of the things I'd spent my entire life wanting weren't necessarily what I wanted anymore. Today, I'm happier with my decision than I ever expected to be. But there's another part of this story I haven't talked about enough. I'm still living with the consequences of things that happened years ago. I'm still figuring things out. And now that I've let go of a future I spent decades imagining, I'm standing at another crossroads. For the first time, I don't know what I want the next chapter to look like. And I'm not afraid of that. This episode is the story behind my decision, the road that brought me here, and what happens when you begin questioning the life you thought you were supposed to want. Because fourteen years ago, I couldn't have imagined the woman I'd become. And right now, I have absolutely no idea who I'll be fourteen years from today.
