Description
For the first episode of Zenobia Darling’s Midnight Meltdown, I’m opening the case file on one of the most infamous names in modern paranormal pop culture: Sylvia Browne. And this isn't a standard deep dive... This is an old-fashioned stand-up comedy roast of this famous paranormal grifter.
I’m taking a deep dive through Sylvia’s bizarre paranormal-media career, from her first appearance on In Search Of…in the 1970s to her rise to national fame in the 1990s. We’re stopping at the Moss Beach Distillery for her legendary 1992 appearance on Unsolved Mysteries, then going straight into her absolutely unhinged appearances on the paranormal news magazine SIGHTINGS in 1994 and 1995.
But this isn't just paranormal television archaeology. I was there.
In 2005, during the height of her Montel talk show appearances, I went to see Sylvia Browne do a live gallery reading in Baltimore — and what I witnessed that night took the whole psychic thing into a much darker place that I get into.
I’m also getting into Sylvia’s 1990 fraud conviction, the ethics of psychic readings, her notoriously wrong and deeply unethical reading involving Amanda Berry and her mother, her obsession with being on paranormal television, and the strange world of turning other people's grief, fear, and supernatural beliefs into a media empire that she profited from — charging $700 for a ten-minute phone reading in the early 2000s, with a two-year wait list.
And yes, I’m going to give her some flowers.
Because love her, hate her, believe her, or think she was completely full of shit, Sylvia Browne was an OG paranormal influencer. Before social media, she understood the assignment. She understood branding. She understood television. She understood spectacle. She knew how to turn being a psychic into a pop-culture career — and, dare I say, a grift.
But Sylvia was also a paranormal media whore of the highest order, and some of the shit that went down crossed a line from campy psychic entertainment into something much darker.
And then, of course, there’s Prophecy — and the many, many ghostwritten books she published throughout her career.
At the end of the roast, I’m digging into Sylvia’s infamous 2004 prediction that appears to describe a global pandemic — because if I’m going to drag Sylvia Browne through the paranormal cemetery, I might as well see what she supposedly saw coming.
So pour yourself a drink, light a candle, put on your finest haunted glamour, and come down the rabbit hole with me.
She has been dead since 2013, but somehow she's still haunting television.
Welcome to Midnight Meltdown.
