Play Better Blues Solos in Just ONE Position

Steve Stine (GuitarZoom Academy) shows how to get real, melodic blues phrasing by camping in one spot on the neck and treating that position like a full roadmap of the song, not a box you get stuck inside. We build everything around a 1 4 5 in the key of A (A, D, E) and make it more authentic with A7, D7, and E7 colors.  We start by visualizing chord shapes and chord tones at the 12th fret using CAGED thinking, then connect those shapes to the A major pentatonic scale so your lead lines naturally outline the harmony. You’ll hear how chord tones become targets, while the “extra” pentatonic notes become the smooth steps between targets, turning scale patterns into musical sentences. We also nail one of the most important blues guitar sounds: finding the minor seventh by stepping back from the root, and using it to add that gritty blues pull.  Then we layer in a classic flavor move Steve calls the minor major twist, slipping the minor third against a major chord for tension and release. From there, it’s all about choices: stay in A major pentatonic across the whole progression, or shift your pentatonic approach with each chord (like D minor pentatonic over D and E minor pentatonic over E) for more motion and contrast.
