I statements vs you statements: most people have heard of the swap, but there's a second step almost nobody teaches, and it's the one that actually keeps people at the table.
In this episode, communication and emotional intelligence coach Sandy Gerber breaks down why "you" statements shut people down before they even hear what's being said, and why the standard fix, switching to "I," only gets you halfway there. She shares research out of UC Berkeley that tracked married couples' pronouns during real arguments and found something measurable in their heart rates and their marriages. She also walks through a client story about the danger of absolutes like "never" and "always," and how one small word swap turned a defensive spiral into an actual conversation.
Sandy then shows how she uses "we" proactively, with her own kids and her team, long before there's any conflict to repair, and why that's the version of the tool most people never hear about. Then she takes it a step further, into the conversation people have with themselves when nobody else is listening. The same pronouns that keep another person in the room can keep you in the room with yourself too.
For anyone who has said something completely true and still watched the room close off, this episode offers the exact word to reach for instead.
