The book follows four generations of women tied to a family farm in Weld County, Colorado. The story is set against the backdrop of the 2008 financial crash and talks about land and family and what it takes to hold onto both. In Appraisals we meet Flora, whose granddaughter Maggie is a committed farmer, trying to pass her love of the land to her teenage daughter Ozzie. The family’s love for each other is put to the test when Maggie’s husband Fish takes a job with an oil and gas company, testing their marriage.
