Bölüm Hakkında
Four identical houses on one street: one on mains gas, one on LPG, one on oil and coal, one with panels on the roof and a heat pump out the back. Between them you have nearly every energy source in Unit 314 — and your job is knowing which is which, and why it matters.
This episode covers sources of renewable and non-renewable energy for Unit 314 of the 9289 Level 3 Diploma, Phase 3, Learning Outcome 1 (AC1.1–1.3). Chris Bailey sets out the two reasons we move toward renewables — emissions and depletion — then works the four non-renewable headings (oils, gases, solid fuels, and electricity generated from non-renewable sources), before tackling the distinction that catches most learners out: low-carbon producers versus zero-carbon producers. He then walks every technology one by one — solar thermal, solar PV, wind, tidal and river hydro, geothermal heat pumps, biomass and green hydrogen — and finishes by deriving all ten worksheet answers from first principles, naming the two traps that lose marks.
You will learn to:
Define non-renewable energy as finite, and renewable energy as sources that do not run out
List the four headings of non-renewable energy, including electricity from non-renewable generation
Explain why electricity is a carrier, not a source
Distinguish low-carbon producers from zero-carbon producers
Separate solar thermal (heat for hot water) from solar photovoltaic (DC converted to AC)
Explain how wind, tidal barrages, tidal stream, river and dam hydro generate electricity
Define a heat pump as moving heat from a low- to high-temperature reservoir via the refrigeration cycle
State the condition that makes hydrogen renewable — green hydrogen via electrolysis
Sort ten appliances into low-carbon and high-carbon producers
Also in this episode: The Copper Connection Podcast has been shortlisted as a finalist at the 2026 Independent Podcast Awards in the Best Children and Young Adults category.
Homework: keep your eyes open for solar thermal systems locally — hot water, not PV — and bring a picture in, because the next session builds directly on solar thermal.
