Inside the Install: Building a Repeatable, Profitable Repowering and O&M Model

Description
In our most recent webinar, SMA’s Brandon Davis, Director of Distribution, and Tanya Layfield, Territory Sales Manager, joined BayWa r.e.’s Strategic Partnerships Manager, Daniela Schwartzman for a session focused on helping installers navigate this evolving landscape. This webinar brought together industry expertise and real-world insights to help solar professionals turn repowering into a scalable, profitable part of their business.
Officially named, “The Technical and Business Case for a Repeatable Repowering & O&M Model,” you can watch the full webinar here or read the blog below for information that was shared in the session.
Why Repowering Is Happening Now
During the webinar, Brandon Davis states, “Repowering, in our minds, is the opportunity to upgrade an existing photovoltaic systems inverter and enhance it and maintain the original system functionality but potentially bring additional feature sets to your customer.” Aging inverters, expired warranties, declining system performance, and the absence of the original installer are leaving system owners with limited support. As a result, repowering is becoming a core offering for installers looking to stay competitive while delivering real value to their customers.
Identifying and Qualifying Repowering Opportunities
Another key focus of the discussion was how installers can efficiently identify repowering opportunities. The SMA team shared practical guidance on evaluating systems based on age, inverter brand, warranty status, and production loss. These indicators allow installers to prioritize leads and focus efforts where repowering delivers the most impact.
Creating a Repeatable Sales and Operations Model
Beyond technical considerations, the session explored how to structure internal teams to support a successful repowering and O&M strategy. From lead generation and site assessment to sales, permitting, and installation, clearly defined roles and workflows are essential for efficiency and profitability.
Brandon and Tanya also shared insights into customer conversations as well as messaging strategies that will help installers build trust with their customers. When the original installer is no longer in business, homeowners and commercial system owners are often uncertain or frustrated. Clear, transparent communication can turn that uncertainty into confidence and long-term relationships.
