Nobody joins the Marine Corps wanting to become a shitbag. But somewhere along the way, it happens. I know because it happened to me. I went from fighting in the barracks, arguing with NCOs, getting my ass chewed constantly and nearly being administratively separated to becoming a Martial Arts Instructor Trainer, leading Marines and eventually becoming a Gunnery Sergeant. And that transformation wasn't clean. I still fucked up. I got a will-not-promote. I got NJP'd as a Corporal. I made mistakes even after I decided to change. In the final episode of the Shitbag Series, I'm talking directly to the Marine who knows they're capable of more but doesn't know how to turn their reputation, attitude or career around. We talk about admitting when you're the problem, becoming boring and reliable, changing who you surround yourself with, choosing which battles are actually worth fighting, rebuilding trust, and what to do when you inevitably fuck up again. You might be a shitbag Marine today. That doesn't mean you have to be one tomorrow.

Marines often blame toxic leadership, their unit, or the military for why they’ve stopped caring—but what happens when their own behavior is part of the problem? In this episode of the Meech Speaks Podcast, Meech breaks down what it really means to be a “shitbag Marine,” how those behaviors appear at every rank, and the difference between making a mistake and consistently becoming a detriment to your team. This conversation examines accountability in the Marine Corps, poor leadership, negative attitudes, declining performance, and the consequences of becoming known as someone who cannot be trusted. Meech also shares his experience as a problem Marine who had to rebuild his reputation and earn back the trust of his leadership. Sometimes the unit really is toxic. Sometimes leadership really does fail Marines. But receiving your DD-214 won’t automatically fix the habits you developed while wearing the uniform. The same lack of accountability can follow you into the civilian workforce, your relationships, your business, and your home. Being a shitbag doesn’t have to become your permanent identity—but changing begins with asking an uncomfortable question: Am I making my environment better, or am I making it worse? A Marine graduates boot camp disciplined, motivated, and ready to take on the world. Then they hit the fleet. A year later, they're counting down the days until EAS, doing the bare minimum, complaining about everything, and everybody around them has decided they're a shitbag. But were they always like that? Or did we help create them? In this episode of the Meech Speaks Podcast, we're taking a hard look at the environments we create for young Marines. We talk about what happens when good Marines are rewarded with more work, poor performers are given less responsibility, toxic leaders are allowed to flourish, and organizations become more concerned with getting results than the people actually producing them. But leadership and the environment aren't the only things that deserve scrutiny. How much energy are you giving to the bullshit around you? That argument with your coworker might last ten minutes, but you're still thinking about it on the drive home. You're thinking about it at dinner. You're thinking about it before bed. Eventually, something that happened at work starts taking time and energy away from everything outside of it. And then there's the question of how we cope with all of it. I also discuss recent research examining workplace stress and after-work alcohol use, my own experiences using alcohol to decompress earlier in my Marine Corps career, and why we need healthier ways of leaving work at work. This episode isn't about absolving Marines of personal responsibility, and it isn't another excuse to blame everything on "toxic leadership." It's about asking harder questions: When did that Marine become like this? How much did the environment contribute? How much energy are we giving to things we can't control? And maybe the most uncomfortable question: Am I that Marine? Someone may arrive at your unit motivated. What happens to them afterward is something all of us have a hand in.

We talk a lot about toxic leadership in the military. But what happens when the person creating the toxic environment… is you? Coming off last week's conversation about Lance Corporal Houston and the way service members and veterans tore him apart online while he was being recognized for his actions at Abbey Gate, I started thinking about something bigger: Why are we so comfortable tearing down our own? We preach brotherhood. We preach camaraderie. We say “Till Valhalla,” raise awareness for veteran suicide, and call each other brothers and sisters. But get underneath almost any military post online and you'll find service members and veterans absolutely destroying each other. And maybe some of that comes from wounds we never dealt with. Maybe you were overworked. Maybe somebody else got credit for your work. Maybe you gave everything to your unit and nobody recognized you. Maybe a toxic leader genuinely screwed you over. You have every right to be angry about what happened to you. But the Marine who shows up tomorrow didn't do that to you. In this episode, we're talking about what happens when hurt service members become part of the same toxic culture they hated, why your attitude can influence an entire workplace, and why breaking the cycle sometimes means accepting that nobody is coming to fix what happened to you. You may never get the apology. You may never get the recognition. You may never see that toxic leader held accountable. But you can make sure the people who come after you don't experience what you did. Because someone else may have caused the damage. You decide whether that damage gets passed on. Stop being great. Be extraordinary.

Sometimes you have to step away from the noise to realize just how much we’re focused on the wrong shit. After taking 30 days away from creating new content, I’m back with a different perspective. In this episode, we talk about Lance Corporal Jordan Houston and the Marines whose awards stemming from the Abbey Gate attack were upgraded. Houston stood there receiving the Bronze Star Medal with Valor for his actions during one of the darkest moments of the Afghanistan withdrawal, and somehow much of the conversation online became about his beard, his hair, and how he wore his uniform. At what point did we lose sight of what actually matters? We also need to have a conversation about the military content creator space. Having a platform comes with influence, whether we acknowledge it or not. Junior Marines, future service members, peers, and leaders are watching. So when does creating meaningful content turn into simply feeding the algorithm? And finally, I talk about what 30 days away taught me about my own platform, burnout, Facebook unexpectedly taking off, and why sometimes the best thing you can do is step away, recalibrate, and come back focused.
