<p>It's not easy being Black in Oregon, a state originally founded as a <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2016/07/racist-history-portland/492035/" target="_blank">white utopia</a>. For Portia Mittons, a transplant from Chicago, it's even harder: She's the only person of color in Sumpter, Oregon--a town more than five hours east of Portland, population, roughly 200 people.
