The Deal Is Breaking
Last week the U.S. paid its first trillion-dollar interest bill. France burned. Alberta voted on leaving Canada. I don’t think those are three stories. I’ve been chewing on this for days. A deficit, a riot, and a referendum look unrelated, but I think they’re one story: the deal you’ve lived under your whole life and never signed. The state promises security. You hand over your taxes and your trust. And the math under that deal assumed every generation would be bigger than the last. It isn’t. So I went through the trustees’ own report on Social Security running out in 2032, the birth rate, the national debt crisis, and the rescue everyone is counting on, AI, including the Hugging Face incident that has me rattled. You’ll leave with what Joseph did with an uncomfortable warning, and what my husband and I changed in our house because of it. "Be Gentle With Yourself" Might Be Keeping You Stuck
“Be gentle with yourself.” I heard it at exactly the right moment and used it to get out of something I needed to do. Two days later, the thing was still there. I had to admit the phrase I was leaning on might be keeping a lot of us stuck, me included. So I went back to the word Jesus used for His own heart in Matthew 11:29. Gentle and lowly. The Classical Greek word behind gentle was used for a war horse. Not a tame one. All of its power still in it, answering to a hand on the rein. Meekness in the Bible is strength under control, and that changes what it means to be gentle with yourself. I walk through Moses, Hebrews 4, and the receipt that tells you whether you are being gentle or avoiding something. You will leave with a clear line between rest and avoidance, and a better question to ask the next time someone tells you to go easy on yourself. Christians Stopped Whispering. Is That Revival?
For a long time, I edited myself before I ever opened my mouth. Not lying. Edited. The true thing would rise up in me about God, about right and wrong, about my kids, and somewhere between my heart and my mouth it got sanded down until nobody could be offended. Lately, I’ve watched people stop doing that, me included. Christians are saying what they believe out loud, and I’m glad. But some of what’s being called revival looks a lot like the culture’s anger with a cross hung around its neck. Both are happening at once, so I went down the rabbit hole. In this episode: * Why so many of us are done censoring ourselves, and why I’m glad * Barna’s data on young adults returning to church, and the widest gender gap in church attendance in 25 years * Louder identity, thinner formation: the trend underneath the headlines * Two kinds of boldness: the one aimed at winning and the one that comes from being with Jesus * The “Christian nationalist” label and the pendulum swing on both sides * Acts 4: what Peter and John prayed after they were threatened * Three questions to test your own boldness, and the one I’m asking myself this season Timestamps 01:10 Today’s rabbit hole: where is the new boldness coming from?01:20 Why so many of us are done censoring ourselves03:05 Men now outpace women in church attendance05:00 Two kinds of boldness05:55 The “Christian nationalist” label07:45 Acts 4: Peter and John before the council08:35 The prayer nobody expects (Acts 4:29–30)10:15 So is this revival? When You're Stuck and Unsure, Make It Smaller
I almost didn’t record this one. I sat down to plan it and thought, I don’t have anything new to say. Everything I want to tell you, God already said, and He said it better. But I did find something. The smartest people in the room are telling us completely opposite things about where the world is headed, and most of us are too tired to sort it out. I’m right there with you. So this is a One Thought episode, one idea I kept turning over all week: when you’re stuck and unsure, the move is not bigger. It’s smaller, and it’s closer. We walk through Psalm 131, where a king with real enemies and a nation leaning on him chooses not to occupy himself with things too great for him. We look at Deuteronomy 29:29 and the line between secret things and revealed things, and why all our spinning happens on the side where there’s nothing for us to do. Then Elijah under the broom tree in 1 Kings 19, where God answers a burned-out prophet with food, sleep, a whisper, and one next assignment. You’ll leave with one question to ask yourself the next time your mind starts spiraling about the future, and a way to tell which worries are yours to carry and which ones were never assigned to you. In this episode: * Why nobody agrees on what happens next, and what that does to us * The news fatigue research, and why exhaustion is driving it more than politics * Psalm 131 and the difference between a hungry infant and a weaned child * Deuteronomy 29:29: secret things belong to God, revealed things come with an assignment * Yes, I mention aliens. Stay with me * Elijah, burnout, and what God’s care looked like for a man who could not see the future * The one question I’m asking this week: is this a secret thing or a revealed thing? Timestamps 00:55 Today’s one thought: smaller and closer 01:05 When the experts stopped agreeing 02:25 Why so many people are avoiding the news 03:55 Three things David shows us 06:45 A whistleblower, aliens, and the mysteries of God 07:30 Elijah under the tree in 1 Kings 19 08:40 The one question to ask when you’re spinning Scripture in this episode: Psalm 131, Deuteronomy 29:29, 1 Kings 19, Romans 12:2 Read this week’s article: ”Nobody Is Coming to Save You” Is Not in the Bible. Nothing New Under the Sun, Including Your Fear
Something is coming, and I am not ready. That thought shows up at the gas pump, in the war headlines, and in the backseat question about whether robots are taking over. In this episode of The Thought Vault, I go straight into the rabbit hole I have been in for three years now. Oil, the Strait of Hormuz, recession forecasts that contradict each other, AI layoff numbers that say two opposite things at once, super intelligence, and whether my kids will even learn to drive. Then I take all of it to Scripture. Ecclesiastes says there is nothing new under the sun. Jesus, asked about the end of the world, opens with a warning about deception and a command not to be alarmed. And Joseph, handed seven years of warning, does not build a bunker. This is a Sanctified and Skeptical episode. Faith at the foundation. Curiosity about everything else. In this episode * What the data actually says about oil, gas, recession odds, and AI layoffs, and why the people paid to know do not agree * How economic numbers get weighted, and why two unemployment rates can both be “true” * Why the Luddites in 1811, Keynes in 1930, and an automation memo to the President in 1964 all sound like this morning * C.S. Lewis on living in an atomic age, and the line about frightened sheep * The two commands Jesus gives in one breath in Matthew 24 * The Headline Test, three questions for any alarming story * Joseph in Genesis 41, and why preparation became generosity instead of a bunker * Three practical responses for a season you cannot predict Timestamps * 00:00 Something Is Coming * 00:43 Pharaoh’s Troubling Dream * 01:34 Welcome to Thought Vault * 02:47 Bubble vs Bunker * 05:11 War, Oil, and Prices * 06:33 Recession Signals and Confusion * 08:03 AI, Jobs, and Data Fog * 11:03 Kids, College, and Driving * 14:23 Nothing New Under the Sun * 18:56 Jesus: Stay Alert, Don’t Panic * 20:22 The Headline Test * 22:58 Joseph Stores for Famine * 24:57 Cast Bread, Keep Sowing * 26:43 Three Practical Responses * 28:35 Final Charge: Plant Anyway The Headline Test Three questions to ask before an alarming headline gets into your nervous system: * What does this source want me to feel, and who benefits if I feel it? * If this is completely true, what would I actually do differently this week? If the answer is nothing, put it down. * What has God already said about this? Three practical responses * Test what you take in. Put a fence around the news. Pick a time, pick your sources, and stop letting the feed pick them for you. * Store in the good years. Time, energy, relationships, skills, money. Steward it the way Joseph did, steadily, before you need it. * Keep planting. Have the conversation. Start the project. Give generously. A seed planted in an uncertain year is still a seed. Scripture referenced * Genesis 41:8, 41:16, 41:57 (Pharaoh’s dream and Joseph’s storehouse) * Ecclesiastes 1:9 (nothing new under the sun) * Ecclesiastes 11:1-6 (cast your bread upon the waters, sow in the morning) * Isaiah 46:9-10 (declaring the end from the beginning) * Matthew 24:4-6 (see that no one leads you astray, see that you are not alarmed) * Romans 12:2 (the renewing of your mind) Subscribe free. This week’s Bold Life article goes after the inside version of this, the loop in your own head that keeps you watching instead of planting. It is free to read, and subscribing is where this conversation keeps going between episodes. The Book Club is back, and it is for paid subscribers. Starting Monday, October 5, we are reading Gentle and Lowly by Dane Ortlund together in the private community. It is a book about the heart of Christ toward people who are still in process. Not people who finished. Not people who optimized. People in the middle of it. Grab a copy this week, physical if you can, because you are going to want to underline it. Upgrade to paid to join us. Then tell me in the comments: what have you stopped planting because you have been watching the wind? I read every one, and I will go deeper on any of this if you ask. Also mentioned The International Energy Agency on the Strait of Hormuz disruption. Challenger, Gray and Christmas layoff data through August. Anthropic and Stanford research on entry-level hiring. The Luddites (1811). John Maynard Keynes on technological unemployment (1930). The 1964 automation memo. C.S. Lewis, “On Living in an Atomic Age” (1948). Note on the numbers: these were current as of September and this data moves weekly. Run the Headline Test on all of it, including the research from the AI companies. This is a public episode.
