214 - Content Is the Product with Quintel Harcum of QS Studio
Join us on The DMV Business Show with Otto Sevilla as we share the journey of Quintel Harcum, also known as “Q”, the Founder of QS Studio, for an in-depth conversation about entrepreneurship, branding, and navigating the challenges of building businesses in the DMV region and beyond. The discussion kicks off with Quintel explaining his background as a “content first marketing strategist” who helps small and mid-sized businesses build content systems to attract clients and grow partnerships with less grunt work. He shares the philosophy that “the content is the product” and underscores the importance of elevating content to the status of a consumable product, rather than seeing it as mere marketing fluff. The conversation then delves into Quintel’s personal entrepreneurial journey. Raised in Baltimore, he describes how growing up in the city shaped his worldview and ambition. He credits a local business owner, Mr. Bill, and his record shop, as an early influence that sparked his entrepreneurial spirit. While basketball and team sports formed much of his youth, the seeds of business were planted early through these neighborhood role models. Quintel attended Lincoln University in Pennsylvania on an academic scholarship, originally pursuing education before switching to philosophy after being inspired by impactful professors. He recounts his early forays into entrepreneurship in college, doing classmates’ homework for a fee, making mix-tapes, and selling snacks, early lessons in meeting customer needs and hustling for opportunities. After college, unsure of his path, he cycled through random jobs, considered law school, and eventually landed steady government work. But the call of entrepreneurship persisted. He and friends started a nightlife promotions business that taught him the art of partnerships, understanding customer service, and quickly learning about real-time profits, expenses, and the dynamics of running events. That experience laid the groundwork for his next venture: opening a juice bar in Baltimore while still employed by the government. The juice bar journey began unconventionally, in his apartment living room, where he ran monthly pop-up shops, leveraging his network and social media to draw customers. The proof of concept led to a brick-and-mortar location and eventually a partnership with Johns Hopkins to open a second location. However, the challenges of the industry, thin margins, and the heavy demands of food and beverage led Quintel to pivot toward the aspect he truly thrived in: branding, marketing, and community building. Throughout the episode, Quintel shares tactical advice for business owners, such as using apps like Superphone to collect customer information and foster loyalty, building visible and consistent brands, and turning testimonials into powerful digital proof that drives new business. He emphasizes the importance of focusing on cash flow, staying nimble, and not growing too quickly, drawing from his real-life setbacks and successes, including the challenges of closing his first shop and balancing demanding roles. Ultimately, he reveals that his passion lies in helping service-based businesses become more visible and profitable online, using strategic content as a core product offering. He advocates for continuous personal development and connecting with customers both digitally and face-to-face through community and live experiences. The episode ends with reflections on lessons learned, the necessity of great marketing, the value of staying profitable for as long as possible, and his excitement for the future of QS Studio, where he aims to empower more businesses with smart strategy, AI workflows, and practical tools for growth. This episode is brought to you by: SEVI
